This is the devitalization of a tooth severely compromised on account of a carious process that has reached the pulp (the nerve) or following a trauma that caused the necrosis (death) of the pulp itself; endodontic treatment therefore consists in emptying the dental canals, disinfection, moulding and subsequent filling with special materials. The aim is to ensure that there is no reproduction of bacteria in the canals, which could form a granuloma at the dental apex, which can, in turn later become a dental abscess.   

Endodontics also deals with re-treatments that consist of carrying out a new root canal treatment by removing the old one when it is no longer effective.
